Elyria Community Elementary Extra-Curricular Activities

STEM
Students learn about science & technology by participating in various interactive lessons.

Spelling Bee
Students learn competition, spelling strategies, and sportsmanship. They will participate in the school spelling bee, the All Constellation Spelling Bee, and the Lorain County Spelling Bee.

Library Club
Students work on organizing and entering books into the school's indexing system. They may provide input on additional purchases.

Garden Club
The Garden Club is designed for second graders to focus on student wellness as they grow plants and learn about plant life cycles, the benefits of gardening, and nutrition. The students grow plants (such as vegetables and flowers) in soil and also create take home crafts. Garden Club meets on Wednesdays starting on March 1st through April 12th from 3:45 PM to 4:30 PM.

The purpose of the youth gardening program is to introduce gardening, conservation, protection of wildlife, recognition of plants, trees and shrubs, basic flower arrangements, and a love and appreciation of nature. The goal is that they will be future citizens who will be responsible and capable with greater self-expression, dignity, integrity and knowledge of their environment.

Girls on the Run Club
Over a period of 10 weeks, girls in the 3rd grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. The girls meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM.


Elyria Community Middle Extra-Curricular Activities
All clubs meet every Tuesday from 3:30-4:30. For more information on a student activity, please contact the middle school office.

1st Round of Clubs - Beginning in the Fall

Knitting Club
Students learn concentration, character education, and math skills through knitting. Various projects are completed throughout fall.

Minecraft Club
Students meet and collaborate about computer games and Minecraft.

Soccer Club
Students learn about the game of soccer and compete after school.

Girls Running Club
Girls meet to participate in running laps for charity. People pledge money for each lap the girls run. The money raised is donated to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

Cursive Writing & Newspaper Club
Students write articles about subjects of their choice.

Chess Club
Students learn how to play the game, including the names of the different pieces and how they move. Students also learn a little about the history of chess and are given the chance to play and compete against other students.

Board Game Club
Students meet after school to participate in board games and activities with peers.

Brain Teasers Club
Students meet weekly to solve brain teasers and games that stretch their thinking.

Art Club
Students participate in an after school advanced art club. They learn about different mediums while fully immersed in that medium.

Basketball
Students develop perseverance and learn about sportsmanship, while demonstrating teamwork. Practices are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school. Our games are played on Saturdays.

Coding / Tech Club
Students learn the basics of computer coding and use sites like code.org and Turtle Academy to create designs and pictures. They also learn how to code without a computer.

Arts & Crafts Club
Students meet weekly to complete arts & crafts projects providing extracurricular experience for the students. Projects include painting, making 3 dimensional objects, mandalas that represent each individual student, seasonal and holiday crafts.

Student Council
Student leadership opportunities help to boost skills, responsibility, and school spirit. It promotes a positive school environment with an understanding of government and civics. Students plan service projects, such as food drives and raising money for LLS. Each class has 2 representatives.

Concept Science & Engineering Fair (CONSEF)
Students prepare for science programs and competitions. It encourages the appreciation of the importance of science in our daily lives.

2nd Round of Clubs - Beginning in the Winter

Jazz Band Club
Students selected for the woodwind/brass ensemble meet after school to learn new music. They study the various forms of brass and woodwinds and enhance their own skills and enjoyment through participation.

Yearbook Club
Students work together to create the yearbook, promoting arts and public relations.

Improv Club
Students meet weekly to perform improv & build their improv skills.

Card Game Club
Students meet weekly to learn and play various card games.

Zumba Club
Students learn the importance of fitness and learn about yoga, stretching, and team sports.

Creative Writing Club
Focuses on various types of poetry and short stories, including haiku, free verse, and short fiction stories. Students also discuss how smilies, metaphors, and idioms are used in creative writing.

Minecraft Club
Students meet and collaborate about computer games and Minecraft.

Art Expression Club
Students meet to complete projects including useful and creative items made with duct tape through a Duct Tape donation to our school. Students complete at least 2 duct tape projects with freedom to be creative in their final pieces. We also use other mediums for student expression, including crayon/water color resist, abstract art chalk pieces, painting, and paper sculpture. Student art represents identity, feelings, hopes, and fears.

Academic Challenge Club
Each week members will challenge their knowledge skills through Kahoots and Quizzizz. Each week will feature questions from history, geography, math, language, science, and pop culture.

French Club
Students experience the culture of various French speaking countries through food, movies, and crafts. Students are encouraged to converse with peers in the target language.

Sports Club
Students participate in various team sports in the gymnasium. They learn about sportsmanship and a healthy lifestyle.

Boys Running Club
Students meet to participate in distance running. They compete in a one-mile time trail to set personal goals.
